The real difference: what you expect from a bath
A hot tub is hot water and nothing else. No jets, no electronics. You light the stove, and an hour and a half later you are in it. It gets used in bursts – at the weekend, with guests, after a day in the garden.
A whirlpool is massage. Jets, pumps, filtration, heating to a constant temperature. It is always ready and you get in whenever you like, but it has to run continuously.
That difference weighs more than the price. A tub you heat with wood will never be a spontaneous thing. A whirlpool you only switch on occasionally will not pay for itself.
The comparison in numbers
Purchase. Hot tub from roughly 1 300 to 6 000 euros depending on size and stove. Whirlpool 6 000 to 22 000 euros.
Running. Tub: the cost of one load of wood, and nothing else. Whirlpool: electricity every month, plus chemistry.
Readiness. The tub needs 1.5 to 4 hours of notice. The whirlpool is always ready.
Water care. The tub is drained after bathing or after a few days, with almost no chemistry. The whirlpool holds its water for 2 to 3 months but needs regular chemistry and testing.
Power. A tub with a stove needs none. A whirlpool needs a 400 V connection with its own breaker.

How many people really fit?
The manufacturer’s figure assumes you sit shoulder to shoulder. In practice count one seat fewer if you want to be comfortable.
Which lasts longer?
The composite shell of a tub effectively indefinitely; the stove and the wood are what wear out. In a whirlpool the electronics and pumps set the lifespan – count on 10 to 15 years before components need replacing.
