Cold plunge tubs and ice baths

Cheap plastic tubs sold for ice bathing last a season. The trouble starts in winter: thin plastic turns brittle in frost, warps in the sun and cracks after two years outdoors.

Our tubs use the same composite shell as the heated hot tubs – laminated composite with a gelcoat, a metal frame and thermo wood cladding. The only difference is that there is no stove. From the outside it looks like a hot tub; inside it keeps its shape after years in the open.

Water is also far easier to keep clean in a composite shell – the surface is smooth and dirt does not cling to it.

For one person the smallest oval models are enough. They fit on a balcony or in a bathroom and pass through ordinary doorways.

For two, choose a model around 98 cm wide, or the corner version – that saves space because it sits in the corner of a terrace.

For a sauna or a whole family, the large COMFORT tubs of 1 000 to 1 700 litres make sense. Several people can dip one after another without the water losing its temperature.

In winter, none – the water outside drops to zero on its own. From November to March the tub stays below 10 °C without any help.

Summer is different. Cooling 250 litres from 20 to 10 °C takes around 25 kg of ice; 600 litres takes about 60 kg. That is why smaller tubs are used all year while large ones are more of a cooling pool in summer than an ice bath.

If you want cold water in summer without ice, you need a chiller. Models in the ICE TUB range include one as standard – they hold the set temperature all year and can even warm the water in winter.
